Managing my time & energy
Some learnings from working independently.
Since I work independently, I often have to define myself what I spend my time on. At times this feels great, because (in theory) I could decide to not work that day. There's no one telling me I need to do something. On the flipside, every now and then I feel lost. There's also no one telling me what to do, and giving me a pat on the back. This can make me feel like I haven't done anything all day, even though I spent every hour working.
Some things that have worked for me along the way:
- Set goals for the day/week/month/year.
- Track activities. In combination with goal setting, this helps to see what I've worked on and what I've accomplished.
- Try to limit the days working from home to 2 per week max.
- Go outside every part of the day (morning, afternoon, evening), even for a short work. Don't fill breaks with my smartphone.
- Plan breaks, including evenings where I am not allowed to work. I love my work, which can result in every hour spent on work.
- Realise that 1) some days are groundwork. They are setup for something bigger. 2) My work is intangible. It happens on a screen. Doesn't mean there's nothing happening.
