Artificial intelligence lacks emotion
Some months ago, Malcolm Gladwell made an argument about self driving cars.
Gladwell, who is known for his 10.000 hour theory, described how self driving cars are programmed to stop for people. If all cars were to be self driving and kids started playing soccer in the street, traffic would come to a halt.
I realised the other day how self driving cars would also suffer from this problem in Amsterdam. For anyone living here, you know how reckless cyclists are. Similar to Gladwell's argument, self driving cars would never work in Amsterdam because of this.
At the moment a cyclist will still stop if cars start driving. Because a real driver makes mistakes. And because they have a temper. And a character. And not just intelligence.
We are not fully rational. In order for self driving cars to work we need more than intelligence.
